At Sea- French Polynesia

I’m on board the Oceania ship, the Nautica, sailing through French Polynesia. The operative word today is THROUGH.

The ship departed from Tahiti last night and arrived early this morning near Moorea. Last night I watched a video about Moorea, and it looked gorgeous; towering peaks set against turquoise water. The botanical garden filled with exotic flowers I’d never seen. The panoramic views from lookout points were breathtaking. I was excited.

I woke up this morning to steely gray skies and steady rain. Hoping this was temporary and that like most tropical weather the rain would clear, and blue skies appear.

Two hours later the rain was still falling when the over the PA system the captain announced we would not be docking in Moorea. “Safety first,” he said. The weather conditions were not expected to improve, and the sea was very choppy. Instead, we’d be heading to our next port of call, arriving there tomorrow morning.

To add insult to injury, the choppy seas began to get to me. I became nauseated and convinced that at any moment I would puke. I should add that I rarely get seasick – I survived 15-foot swells in the artic ocean and never felt like I’d be sick.

So, I slept most of today. Fingers crossed for better weather tomorrow.
