The plan today was to go to a park, using the metrocable to get there. However the parks were not open. Instead, we decided to go downtown. I wanted to revisit the Boteros.
For those of you unfamiliar with Fernando Botero, he was a Colombian artist, very famous for his sculpture and his paintings. He lived for much of his life not far from the center of Medellin. His sculpture and paintings are quickly recognizable because of the bulk of the people.
When Jim, Phil and I arrived, we started taking silly photos of the Botero sculptures. Then, we got even sillier, playing with the photos. Adding hands and faces and such.
On Botero Square is a unique building originally constructed as government offices. It still serves that purpose. Neither Phil nor Jim had ever been inside. So we decided to go for a look. It’s quite a building both inside and out. It also had great views of the surrounding area.
Phil needed to go home to work. Jim and I had lunch downtown. Then, he peeled off and I spent the afternoon at the Museo de Antioquia.
On display are many of Botero’s works. However, visitors are not permitted to take photos of the paintings. I complied with this.
Also on display was the work of many South American artists, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s unfortunate that we don’t get to see the work of these artists more often.
