Columbus, Indiana is actually a city of 47,000. Not a town, but considering its small size, a mecca for world-renowned architecture.
The American Institute of Architects ranked it sixth in the nation for architectural innovation and design – right behind Chicago, New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. There are more than ninety buildings and pieces of public art by some of the best-known architects in the world.
Not far from Columbus is West Baden Springs, population 545. IT was home to the French Lick resort. Built in 1902 it featured the largest glass dome in the world at the time, as well as a velodrome, natatorium and other unusual amenities. It attracted notable celebs of the day. After a fire, it was abandoned. A recent renovation has brought it back to life — I’ve been there twice, pre and post renovation.
