Quirky American Towns — West Coast

Cannon Beach in Oregon has a population of about 1,500. You don’t go there for the town, but for the beach, which is among the most beautiful on the west coast. When I first went there it was so foggy I couldn’t even see the famous Haystack Rock. Then it cleared and was spectacular. Nearby there are other equally gorgeous beaches, Bandon, Arcadia and more.

Solvang, CA, is the Danish Capital of America (unlike Frankenmuth, Michigan—the Bavarian Capital of America—despite it being totally flat). In both places there are restaurants that serve enormous meals, endless kitschy shops and an atmosphere that reeks of silliness.

Westport, WA is a tiny town that few people know about. It’s got a lot to offer for a town of just over 2,000 people. Located on the coast, it’s a mecca for activities on or near the water—sailing, fishing, clamming, oystering. Because of this you can eat some of the freshest seafood anywhere.

Nevada City, CA (Population: 3,114) is a quirky Old West town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It’s got everything a tourist might want—history related to the gold rush, well maintained historic buildings, shopping, restaurants and beautiful scenery with easily accessible walking and hiking trails. If you’re into the supernatural, you can take a ghost tour and hear about its haunted history.
