Sag Harbor – Part One – The Ark

I just spent a few days in Sag Harbor (Long Island, NY) visiting my friends Pat and Sandra. Pookah came too and got to spend time with a new canine friend, Brody.

On Friday morning we headed over to The Church, an art gallery with a fascinating history. In 1835 it began as a Methodist church. Since that time, it has gone through numerous transformations and was moved to various locations in the town. In 2007, the congregation deconsecrated the church and sold the building. After three different owners, it was purchased and transformed into an art center—with classes, a gallery, library and more.

We went to see the current exhibition, “The Ark.” On display in the gallery and outdoors are animal sculptures by over 40 international artists spanning the last century. The works, created in metal, wood, ceramic, bronze and more, are stunning.

My absolute favorite was the enormous elephant standing upside down on its trunk. As I looked at it in awe, I asked the guard how they managed to get it into the gallery. “It was 3-D printed in several pieces. The artist then came in and assembled it.” “Wow!” was my response. He then added, “And the whole thing weighs less than I do.”

More tomorrow.
