Yesterday evening I met up with fellow Score mentors (the organization I volunteer with) for an evening at the New York Historical Society. It’s an often overlooked museum that has fascinating exhibitions.
I immediately headed for the Tiffany lamps. Apart from the dazzling lamps, this is a show about feminism and how women’s achievements have been buried.
Clara Driscoll led the Women’s glass cutting department, and most of the lamps in the current exhibition were designed by her. This is known only because a trove of letters she wrote detailing the lamps she designed was found. Without her letters nothing would be known about her contributions.
