Ixtapan, Mexico – Market Day

On Sundays, the center of Ixtapan turns into one enormous, noisy, colorful outdoor market, and I never miss it. Not because I need anything. I rarely buy a thing. But I’m capable of spending hours shopping without actually shopping.

This is no tourist market. Forget souvenir magnets. But if you want the freshest produce, freshly fried chicharrons, baked goods, local cheese, plastic buckets, toys, clothing, hardware, and just about any other household item you might need, this is the place.

Best of all are the vendors. Tourists are a rarity, so smiles come easily, conversations start quickly, and photo requests are happily granted.

My only complaint? Those magnificent fruits and vegetables can’t come home with me. Customs won’t allow it.
